Reuters delivers a commemorative plaque to Ajou after it ranked 9th in Korea in 'Asia's Most Innovative Universities' ranking[16.11.08]Ajou University took 22nd place, which was the 9th place among South Korean universities, in the 'Top 75: Asia's Most Innovative Universities' ranking released by Reuters and Thomson Reuters. On November 8th, President Dong Yeon Kim received a commemorative plaque from a Reuters official in his office.Reuters is an international news agency and announces Asia's Most Innovative Universities annually based on the academic papers and patent filings owned by Thomson Reuters, an information firm. The ranking evaluates individual universities in terms of the number and influence of their science research papers, patent applications and their commercialization, and academic and commercial citations of research findings, etc.This year's ranking includes 22 universities from China, 20 each from South Korea and Japan, 6 from Australia, 2 each from Singapore, India, and Malaysia, and 1 from New Zealand. In Korea, Ajou, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Seoul National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, and Korea University, etc., made the list.

Ajou's Professor Tae Soup Shim develops microrobot driven by DNA information[16.11.08]A research team including Ajou University Professor Tae Soup Shim (Department of Chemical Engineering, pictured above) developed a microrobot that can be controlled more effectively by using DNA information. Findings of the research were published on October 24th in The Nature Nanotechnology, an international academic journal.The Korean research team, including Professor Shim and Professor So Jung Park from Ewha Womans University, and the U.S. research team, including Professor Dae Yeon Lee and Professor John Crocker from the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S., jointly developed an essential technology for driving a ductile microrobot by using the sequencing data of artificial DNA. Professor Shim participated in the research as the first author.A ductile microrobot refers to one made with flexible materials such as nano particles or high molecular substances. It can work in a very narrow and complicated environment like blood vessels within the human body and function with specific electrical signals and physical and chemical stimulation. However, such robots had limitations in performing complex instructions. Thus, the research team developed a microrobot whose moves can be controlled more accurately by using DNA sequencing data for the first time in the world. The research team compared the lengths of DNA molecules when DNA is a single strand and forms a double-helix structure after binding, because different DNA lengths can lead to structural changes, including the shortening or lengthening materials. The team attached the DNA made from manipulating sequencing data to gold nano particles and formed a DNA-gold nano particle structure by binding the DNA. It then formed a double-helix structure by combining the structure with the single-strand DNA with manipulated and matching sequencing data. At the same time, the team made a microstructure that can be controlled in certain ways by introducing two DNA strands with different sequencing data. This allowed for mechanical actions such as folding or overturning, etc. Professor Shim said, "Unlike the computer that is controlled by zero and one, the microrobot can execute more varied and complex instructions because it can be controlled by DNA consisting of A, T, G, and C," adding, "We will be able to make microrobots that can work more precisely even in complex and challenging environments, including drug delivery or blood vessel expansion, if DNA-based control technology develops further."The research was conducted with the support of the Basic Research Project (Individual Studies) carried out by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center of the National Science Foundation in the U.S.

Ajou's 'Career Mentoring with the President' Begins on November 7th [16.11.08]'Career Mentoring with the President' began on the afternoon of November 7th in the Counseling Office of the Creative University Job Center at Ajou University as part of the 'Cheer Up Change Up' Project – a program aimed at effectively supporting students in finding jobs and exploring careers.The mentoring is conducted based on prior applications from students who are having issues related to their life and career. Any of the University’s students, including graduates, can apply and the Colleges take turns holding mentoring sessions. After the first session by the College of Social Sciences on November 7th, the College of Humanities will arrange the second one on the 22nd and the School of Business Administration, the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Information Technology, the College of Engineering, and the College of Pharmacy will follow.The first mentoring was held was held from 2:30 to 3:50 p.m., with six students – two groups of three including a graduate – participating. Only the students, President Dong Yeon Kim, and the relevant consultants attended in consideration of the students' privacy.A student who participated in the mentoring session said, "I was a little nervous because I had never talked with the President in person, but it was great that he gave advice tailored to each student," adding, "He helped me look at my issues from a different perspective. I would recommend it to other students."President Kim said, "The University began the 'Cheer Up Change Up Project' in an effort to share the responsibility with students in exploring their careers and finding jobs," adding, "This mentoring is part of the Project and I chose to provide advice myself to be of help to students."

Ajou's students win the Grand Award at the Creative Idea Contest[16.11.08]Ajou University students in the Graduate School's Department of Life Media won the Grand Award at the 6th K-ICT Creative Idea Contest. The event, which was organized by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, was divided into the two categories of Future Technology and Future Prospects.The Future Technology category invited creative and promising ICT ideas that can be used in future society, while the Future Prospects category received ideas that will be useful in future life, including scenarios, webtoons, and videos. A total of 473 ideas were submitted and 19 teams – 13 teams in Future Technology and 6 teams in Future Prospects – were selected as the final winners after mentoring sessions at the Creative Idea Camp.Ajou's Team IE-STORY won the Minister of Science, ICT, and Future Planning Award and the award ceremony was held on October 20th at EL Tower in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.Team IE-STORY consists of Jin Hyeong Cho and Jin Woo Lee, who major in media content in the Graduate School's Department of Life Media and are leading the on-campus business start-up club IE-STORY (guiding professor Gyu Hwan Oh). Team IE-STORY was awarded for their augmented reality-based authoring tool in which characters colored by children act as in fairy tales.

Ajou's student team wins the Excellence Award at LG Global Challenger[16.11.08]< Members of Team Toad pose for a picture to celebrate winning their award.>Team Toad consisting of Ajou University students received the Excellence Award at LG Global Challenger.The members of the team are Jin Seop Oh and Ji Woo Han (both in the Department of Industrial Engineering), Song Yi Kim (Department of Chemical Engineering), and Ji Min Han (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and they participated in the contest with their assignment entitled 'Building Materials Bank for the Distribution and Transaction of Surplus Building Materials.' They are participating in Paran Semester under the guidance of Professor Joo Yeoun Lee with the related project 'Exploring Ways to Introduce a Building Materials Bank Suitable for South Korea.'Launched in 1995, LG Global Challenger is the oldest overseas travel contest for university students in South Korea. This year, 34 teams with a total of 136 students traveled to 20 countries over two weeks during the summer vacation after being selected in the preliminary round in June. One team won the Grand Prize and three teams received the First Prize, with another three teams being awarded the Excellence Award, based on the evaluation of travel reports submitted by individual teams and their presentations. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim discusses mutual cooperation in his visit to Indonesia[16.11.07]On November 1st, Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim gave a keynote speech upon invitation at the First World Economic Development Forum held in Jakarta, Indonesia.The forum, which was organized by the Joint Secretariat for Economic Cooperation between South Korea and Indonesia, was held to explore innovative ways for emerging countries to lead global economic growth. The Secretariat was established by the governments of both countries to foster economic development in Indonesia. The forum was attended by about 200 people, including officials from different governments and international agencies; experts from industries, academia, and research institutes; businesspeople; and citizens as well as officials from the Indonesian government.The lecture by President Kim was entitled 'Road to a New Power Nation.' He began with an introduction of the Talk Concert on Game-changing Revolution held in May when Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited Ajou University.He then said, "In order to be a power nation, you need to constantly create new things through innovation and embrace others that are different from you," adding, "Indonesia has the world's fourth-largest population, a wealth of raw materials, and solid domestic demand. If Indonesia improves its incentive system and addresses the governance issue by embracing different groups of people, it will be able to become a new power nation." He then participated in a discussion with four panelists after the lecture.During his stay in Indonesia, President Kim visited the University of Indonesia, a sister university of Ajou, and discussed bilateral cooperation with Rector Muhammad Anis. As a national university, it is one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia. Officials from the two universities discussed student exchanges, internships, exchanging professors, and holding joint academic seminars in different majors, etc.President Kim also dropped by KOTRA's Jakarta Office, the Korea Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, and the World-OKTA Jakarta Office, etc. In a meeting with officials from Korindo and SK E&S, he introduced Ajou's flagship programs and discussed student internships and support for industry-academia cooperation, etc. In addition, he talked about launching an MBA course on social enterprises at Ajou University in a meeting with businesspeople based in Indonesia.President Kim also met with officials involved in the Global Young Business Manager (GYBM) program and gave a lecture to the students participating in the second GYBM Indonesia group. GYBM is being carried out by Daewoo SKY Institute to foster global young business managers. It provides intensive education on foreign languages, jobs, and effective personality traits to selected students looking to find jobs overseas. One hundred eighty-six students, including 16 from Ajou, are scheduled to be dispatched to four countries – Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia – after finishing the 2016 program.

Ajou Unification Institute holds various unification-related events[16.11.07]On October 31st, Ajou Unification Institute held the Unification Pop Quiz as part of its 'Unification Marathon: The Second Episode.' The event was designed to enhance citizens' understanding of unification by helping them measure their perception of unification through surveys and quizzes.It began at 1 p.m. in front of the University's Seongho Hall and the quizzes and games covered interesting facts on and changes in North Korea, which helped students learn more about the North.The quizzes and games, including the answers, will be posted on the Institute’s Facebook page.Ajou University is striving to promote unification education at universities across Korea after being selected by the Ministry of Unification as the Unification Education Leading University.The 'Unification Marathon' event was organized as part of such efforts and it will continue both online and offline.The First Episode, which is being held from late September to early November, features 'Infographics Lectures on Unification' consisting of unification-related infographics classes and practices.Ajou Unification Institute plans to organize other events, including 'Unification Running Man,' which will try to enhance understanding of unification through various missions, and 'Unification Talk Concert – Communicating Unification,' etc.

Ajou's indie game development team participating in Paran Semester wins the Grand Prize in a contest hosted by Anyang City[16.11.04]< Byeong Jun Yoon explains the RPG Run game at the contest. > Students who are in Ajou University's Department of Digital Media and participating in Paran Semester won the Grand Prize in the Indie Game category at the '2016 Anyang Smart Content Super Rookie Contest.' The award-winning game is called ‘RPG Run,' which was developed by the team consisting of Byeong Jun Yoon, Min Jae Won, Ji Hun Joo, and Tae Hwan Kim. The team has been participating in Paran Semester with the assignment of developing independent games since spring semester this year.The Contest hosted by Anyang City and organized by Anyang Creative Industry Promotion Agency and Educational Broadcasting System had the categories of Indie Game Development and VR/AR Ideas. It was held for three days from October 27th to the 29th at Anyang Creative Economy & Convergence Center, with about 50 teams participating, including students, corporate employees, and those preparing to start their own businesses. Six teams won awards in the Indie Game Development category and five teams received prizes in the VR/AR Ideas category. RPG Run Team won the Anyang City Mayor Award and five million won in prize money.RPG Run, which the team began developing last semester, features characters trying to escape from monster attacks and get out of a maze. Ajou's Center for Japanese Policy holds an international conference on stimulating local economies[16.11.03]On November 2nd, Ajou University's Center for Japanese Policy (Director Seong Bin Pak) held an international conference on stimulating local economies in Dasan Hall Auditorium. The conference was entitled 'Stimulating Local Economies amid Low Birthrate, Aging, and Globalization: Cases and Lessons of South Korea and Japan.'Sponsored by the Japanese Foundation, the conference was designed to explore ways to stimulate local economies in the challenging environment facing the two countries, including the low birthrate, aging, globalization, and the emergence of China.The speakers at the conference were Director Young Soo Kim of the Regional Development Studies Center under the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, Director Seong Il Lim of the Local Investment Management Center under the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration, Director Maruya Toyojiro of the Research Institute for Regional Economics under Fukui Prefectural University, Director Abe Makoto of the East Asian Studies Group under the Institute of Developing Economies-Japan External Trade Organization, and Professor Kitamura Wataru from Osaka UniversityDirector Young Soo Kim, the first presenter, said, "Slowing growth is a trend facing the Korean economy and it is very likely here to stay amid the declining working-age population resulting from the low birthrate and aging," adding, "The regional economies of South Korea have even more difficulties due to the combination of structural and national-level problems and the development gap between regions." As for ways to stimulate local economies, he suggested, "Each region should establish an ecosystem for industrial technology innovation focusing on the fields in which it has competitive advantages and respond to the constant industrial restructuring by identifying and fostering promising new growth engines that can best utilize the potential of the individual region." He went on to say, "An industrial adjustment promotion area needs to be operated to prevent the industrial ecosystem of the main industrial cluster from collapsing."Director Seong Il Lim stated, "Fiscal policy is critical for regional economies to grow," adding, "It is very important to properly use subsidies from the central government. This is because most of the local governments in Korea have a financial system that is dependent on the transfer of public finances (local grant taxes and government subsidies)." On fostering regional economies, he argued "The local taxation system needs structural changes, including giving more taxation-related authority to local governments, improving the balance between national and local taxes, and decentralizing the power related to tax revenues," adding, "The transfer of public finances also needs improvements, including expanding general subsidies, restructuring the government subsidy system, and introducing capital subsidies and capital budgeting for local governments."Director Maruya Toyojiro, the first speaker from Japan, presented on the case of Hokuriku, Japan, and its implications for South Korea. He mentioned three issues confronting local economies in Japan: the long-term depression of the Japanese economy, the low birth rate, aging, and declining population, and the disparity between centralized Tokyo and other regions in decline. To address these issues, he suggested, "First, take advantage of the opportunities from economic globalization and the growth of the world (particularly Asia). Second, pursue localization and develop regions with diverse strengths. Lastly, reform the working culture to promote women's participation, utilize the elderly and immigrants, and expand permanent workers, etc."Director Abe Makoto said, "Restructuring is unavoidable for South Korea because global trade is shrinking in the shipbuilding, steelmaking, and petrochemical industries and Korea has lost competitiveness, with China and other emerging countries catching up," adding, "The roles of conglomerates and local governments are critical for local economies to be revitalized."The presentation by Professor Kitamura Wataru covered the issue of 'local governments that can lose administrative functions by 2040 amid the low birthrate and aging.' He said, "The pressure for administrative reforms from the central government has reduced the structural resources for Japan's local governments to deal with issues related to the dwindling population," adding, "On average, local government officials are getting old, with retiring officials not being replaced by young people, which undermines the organizational vitality of local governments."Ajou University Professor Jong Sik Kim served as the M.C. at the academic conference and Professor Yong Jin Kim from the University, President Chang Soo Jin from the Sejong Institute, Vice President Sung Chun Jung in charge of the Department of International Macroeconomics & Finance under the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, etc., participated as moderators. 'Ajou Great Lecture for Unification and Sharing' is held[16.10.31]'Ajou Great Lecture for Unification and Sharing,' which was co-hosted by Ajou University and the Unishare Foundation (Chairman Byeong Hun Ahn), was held on October 29th in Yulgok Hall's Video Conference Room at the University. The University organized the lecture to enhance understanding of and interest in unification among local university students and citizens.The lecture consisted of three segments. In the first segment, BOAZ Film CEO Sang Mee Choo gave a lecture entitled 'Culture Opens the Way for Unification.' She said, "I am working on a documentary that follows North Korean orphans who went to Eastern Europe after the Korean War," adding, "I would like to present a blueprint on how our society should embrace North Korea after unification."In the second segment, Jae In Shin, the former President of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, gave a lecture entitled 'Understanding North Korea's Nuclear Programs.' He said, "North Korea's nuclear programs pose military threats to South Korea, undermine economic development, and divide public opinion in the South, and negatively influence the unification of the Korean Peninsula." He added, "Pyongyang's nuclear programs do no good at all, since Seoul is losing the initiative to its neighbors in diplomatic and economic issues."The last segment, entitled 'Unification Is the Jackpot Only When Prepared,' was delivered by former deputy unification minister Yang Ho Hong. He said, "Since the international community will not accept a unified Korea with nuclear arms, Pyongyang's nuclear weapons are in the way of unification," adding, "German unification was possible because they did not develop nuclear weapons."Prior to the lecture, Ajou University and the Unishare Foundation signed an MOU on regular and steady exchanges and cooperation centered around unification-related issues. Executive Vice President Kyung Hee Choi said, "I believe that we should first practice sharing to achieve peace and unification." Director Seok Hong Yoon from Unishare said, "We will join hands with Ajou for many unification-related projects."
