[16.08.18]

The Gyeonggi Unification Forum, which is co-hosted by Ajou University and the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province and sponsored by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, was held on August 16th at the University's Video Conference Room in Yulgok Hall.

During the Forum, Secretary General Byeong Gil Jeon from UniKorea Foundation discussed the importance of content for the unification of the Korean Peninsula in a lecture entitled 'Storytelling for a Unified Korea.'

He cited the popularity of the South Korean-made snack Choco Pie in North Korea and the Manneken Pis sculpture of the Grand-Place in Brussels, Belgium, to explain the influence of storytelling. He said, "Unification should be approached in an emotional manner rather than a strictly logical manner, which requires storytelling."

Secretary General Jeon explained how the storytelling-based approach has influenced Koreans' views of unification through movies relating to North Korea that have been introduced since the 1970s.

He has authored about ten unification-related books, including The Branding for a Unified Korea and The Joint Observation Area.

The Gyeonggi Unification Forum features bi-monthly lectures by renowned people and is being hosted by Ajou since it was designated as the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province. There are a total of 17 Unification Education Centers across the country, which are selected by the Institute for Unification Education under the Ministry of Unification. They are responsible for unification-related education as the educational hubs of their respective communities.
