Three papers authored by Ajou's students are selected as Excellent Paper at the Summer Meeting of the Optical Society of Korea

[16.07.25]

Three papers authored by graduate students from Ajou University were selected as the Excellent Paper at the Summer Meeting of the Optical Society of Korea (OSK).

Two of the award-winning papers were written by Hwan Seong Jung (Department of Energy System Research) and Taek Gyu Lee (Department of Energy System Research), respectively, and the third one was co-authored by Suk Yeong Kim (Department of Energy System Research) and Gyeong Taek Min (Department of Energy System Research). Jung and Lee are being guided by Professor Dong Il Yeom, while Kim and Min are being advised by Professor Sung Hwan Kim.

Ajou's students won awards in three of a total of twenty-three categories, which is the most along with those from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Yonsei University.

The paper authored by Jung is entitled "High-powered (~200 mW) Normal Dispersion Ytterbium All-fiber Lasers (Passive Mode-locked) Based on a Graphene Saturable Absorber," and the one written by Lee is entitled "Ultrafast Fiber Lasers Using a Graphene Saturable Absorber on the Side-polished Polarization Maintaining Fiber." The one co-authored by Kim and Min is entitled "Three-dimensional Photonic Crystal Based on Flexible Silk Protein."

In their research, the students being guided by Professor Yeom implemented non-linear optical switches on optical fiber and used the findings in developing high-performance ultra-short optical fiber lasers.

Jung said, "We have confirmed that graphene nano substances can be applied to ultra-short laser oscillation on optical fiber," adding, "High-powered ytterbium ultra-short fiber laser is an essential light source being used in non-thermal display element processing. I believe that the light source we have developed can be applied to precise laser processing, medicines, and national defense in the future."

Established in 1989, OSK is Korea's largest academic society in optical research and organizes academic conferences, short-term classes, seminars, and lectures, etc. every year.
