Members of Ajou University raised about 9.7 million won to help the Ecuadorean people who were devastated by the recent earthquake. Ecuadorean Ambassador to South Korea Oscar Herrera Gilbert visited the University on May 16th to express his appreciation.

President Dong Yeon Kim delivered the funds raised by Ajou people to the Ecuadorean Ambassador on that day. Professors, staff members, and students participated in the fund-raising.

Ambassador Oscar Herrera Gilbert conveyed his sincere appreciation for the kind interest and support of the University members and delivered a letter of thanks. The meeting between President Kim and Ambassador Gilbert was joined by Dean Joong Soon Jang of the Graduate School and Dean Jay Ick Lim of the Graduate School of International Studies.

The two sides also discussed expanding exchanges between Ecuador and Ajou University. While the number of Ecuadorean students in Korea stood at only six in 2012, it has steadily increased after the Ecuadorean Embassy to South Korea established the Department of Educational Cooperation. This year, about 120 students from Ecuador are expected to study in Korea.

A total of three Ecuadorean students are currently in the master's courses at Ajou University's Graduate School of International Studies, including two under KOICA scholarships.
