Four groups and three teams from Ajou University were selected in the interim evaluation of the BK21+ Project and are set to receive 4.03 billion won per year until 2020.

The BK21+ Project is an initiative in which the government provides financial support for research spending, etc. to those in master's and doctoral courses so that the next-generation academic talents can concentrate on their studies and research. It was first launched in 2013 and will be carried out in two phases until 2020.

In the interim performance assessment, top 50 percent of the previously chosen groups and teams were selected again and the rest were chosen in a competition between the remaining 50 percent of previous players and new applicants. In the assessment, one hundred twenty-seven new groups and teams were chosen, which means that 23.3 percent of the existing ones were replaced.

Four project groups were selected from the University, including the Molecular Science Technology Group (leader: Bun Yeoul Lee), the Convergence-based Futuristic Energy System Group (leader: Gi Hong Kim), the Bio Science Project Group (leader: Byung Gon Kim), and the Digital Therapy Convergence Talents Fostering Group (leader: Gyu Hwan Oh) and three project teams were chosen, including the Creative Talents Fostering Team for Autonomic Network Software for Smart Collaboration among Different Devices (leader: Yeong Bae Go), the Technological Talents Fostering Team for Improving Electronic System Reliability (leader: Kyo Beum Lee), and the Reliable Mobile Software Talents Production Team (leader: Tae Seon Jeong). Applications for project groups should be submitted by individual departments of graduate schools, while project teams are based on research teams led by individual professors. The newly selected project group and team from Ajou are headed by Professor Byung Gon Kim (Department of Medical Sciences) and Professor Kyo Beum Lee (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), respectively.
