Ajou University's Seung Beom Ryu (Department of Mechanical Engineering, pictured left above) won the Ban Ki-moon Award, the top prize in the college division, at the UN Day English Speech Contest, which was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN. The event was hosted by the East and North-East Asia Office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

Ryu received the award with his speech entitled "The Best Way to Solve a Problem Is To Know What It Really Is."

In his speech, Ryu said, "In order to ensure a better future, it is most important to identify and understand the essence of the issues facing the global community with our own eyes, rather than just through books."

The final round of the event was held on October 22nd in Songdo, Incheon, with 45 students in attendance. The participants, who passed the preliminary round from September 21st through the 30th, delivered speeches with different titles, including “A Letter to the UN Secretary General,” “Achievements and Limitations of the UN,” and “The UN and Climate Change.”

Regarding the award, Ryu said, "I believe that it is more important for young people to find what they really want through a variety of experiences than spending time on studying for unclear purposes," adding, "I want to thank the University for giving me many opportunities and Professor Young Moo Park in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for his continued encouragement."
