Ajou University's Endowed Chair Professor Hyeong Ju Park (Department of Mathematics, pictured above) was appointed as the fourth President of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences (NIMS), which is an organization under the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) and conducts research in applied mathematics and related fields.

Professor Park took office as the President of NIMS for a three-year term after the inauguration ceremony on September 21st.

Professor Park graduated from the Department of Physics at Seoul National University and obtained his PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkley in the U.S. He then worked as an assistant professor and associate professor at the University of Auckland's Department of Mathematics in New Zealand. After that, he served as a professor at the School of Computational Sciences of the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, a professor at the Department of Mathematics at Pohang University of Science and Technology, and Head of the Center for Application of Mathematical Principles at NIMS.

As a scholar, Professor Park made great contributions to improving the status of Korea's mathematics community. He served as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee for Seoul International Congress of Mathematicians 2014, which is equivalent to the Olympics for the global mathematics community, and he was the first Korean to be selected as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
