Ajou’s President Dong Yeon Kim gives a keynote speech at a symposium hosted by the Gyeonggi Institute of Education (GIE)

Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim gave a keynote speech at a symposium entitled “Issues and Solutions of Korea's Education amid the Fourth Industrial Revolution”, which was held on October 13th in the Grand Auditorium of the Gyeonggi Institute of Education (GIE).


The event was held to celebrate the third anniversary of GIE's opening and it was attended by about 300 people, including education policymakers, researchers, teachers, and parents.


President Kim gave a keynote speech at the event under the title ‘Education and Game-changing Revolution in Korea’ after congratulatory speeches by Superintendent Jae Jung Lee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and Chairman Ki Youl Jung of the Gyeonggi-do Assembly. President Kim was recommended as a speaker by Superintendent Lee.


President Kim mentioned the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the outrage of a majority of the people as two key issues in our society, emphasizing that education should focus on fostering talents who can find ‘their own answers’ instead of ‘the right answers’ imposed on them.


He added, “We should address structural social contradictions, including the broken ladder of social mobility.” He also introduced projects that Ajou is carrying out to help deal with the structural problems. They include the Paran Semester – Ajou's Creative Activity Semester in which students can choose activities they want to do and receive credits based on the results, and the After You Program where the University selects students having financial difficulties and sends them to overseas partner universities on full scholarships.


President Kim’s lecture was followed by speeches entitled ‘Philosophical Foundation of Future Education in Korea – Diagnosis, Challenges, and Directions’ by Researcher Ki Soo Kim of the Korean Educational Development Institute, ‘Innovation of Educational System for Future Generations’ by Assistant Researcher Hye Jeong Lee of GIE, and ‘Finding Futuristic Schools in Korea's Current Education’ by Director Seul Gi Jang of the Research Institute for Educational Programs Design.
