The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 ranked Ajou University in the 601st-800th range. Performing better than last year in areas that include teaching, research, and international diversity, Ajou University's ranking this year makes it Korea's eighth-best university, a position shared with another university.

Times Higher Education (THE) is a British magazine reporting specifically on news and issues related to higher education. Like Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), it assesses and ranks all the universities in the world every year. For the 2023 rankings, 2,325 universities in 104 countries were assessed.

THE ranked the top 1,799 universities based on its assessments. Ajou University has retained its position from last year, making it into the 601st-800th range again, a recognition placing it as the eighth-best university in Korea.

Ajou University fared better than last year in a number of assessed categories. In the five areas of Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Diversity based on 13 indicators, the university achieved higher scores in Teaching and Citations this year.

Industry Income gave Ajou University the highest ranking this year, at 162nd. Ajou University has been making notable achievements in technology transfer and other aspects of technology commercialization. Technology commercialization involves commercialization of a university’s R&D products through technology transfers, foundation of tech startups, and other avenues. A university can sell its developed technologies to companies or institutions, or commercialize them itself through a technology holdings company or a related subsidiary of such a company.

Ajou University recorded KRW 5.21 billion in technology transfer revenue through 71 transfers in 2021, ranking fourth among Korean universities. To put that figure into perspective, the average such revenue among the 128 Korean universities that produced technology transfer revenue in 2021 was around KRW 900 million. Ajou University's technology transfer revenue has been increasing every year for six consecutive years.

Each year, THE assesses and ranks the world's universities in the 5 categories of Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Diversity based on 13 indicators. The University of Oxford was named the world's No. 1 university in the THE World University Rankings 2023, an honor it has retained for 7 consecutive years. Harvard University (2nd), the University of Cambridge and Stanford University (tied for 3rd), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5th) followed.

Ajou University has been doing well in the established global rankings of universities. It rose above the 500th position for the first time in the QS World University Rankings 2023, announced in June this year, after a continuous upward climb for 4 years, and was ranked 113th in the THE Asia University Rankings 2023, representing a jump of 17 places.
