The August 25th edition of the Maeil Business Newspaper features an interview with Ajou President Choi Kee-choo, in which he details Ajou University's achievements and vision in commercialization of technology.

Ajou University's latest achievements in commercialization of technology, the latest news about Ajou University Technology Holdings, notable examples of technology transfer, and the establishment of new departments in advanced technology were all covered in the interview.

Technology commercialization involves the commercialization of R&D achievements through technology transfer, tech startups, and other avenues. Successful commercialization allows a university to capitalize on its R&D achievements and diversify its sources of revenue to increase business and national competitiveness and create jobs.

Ajou University's Technology Commercialization Team discovers promising technologies developed by students and researchers and links them to businesses that would benefit through a range of activities that results in commercialization and practical usage. To help researchers begin their own startups on core technologies they develop, Ajou University launched Ajou University Technology Holdings as a corporation last year. Through this holding corporation, Ajou University generates revenue from technology commercialization and re-invests it in R&D. Three subsidiaries have been formed under Ajou University Technology Holdings thus far.

The efforts of Ajou University and its researchers are paying off, as the stellar achievements in technology transfer attest. Last year, Ajou University recorded KRW 5.21 billion in technology transfer revenue through 71 transfers, ranking it fourth nationally after Yonsei University, Seoul National University, and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Ajou University's technology transfer revenue has been increasing for six consecutive years.

President Choi’s comments included, "Ajou University must be more active in fulfilling its social responsibility," and that "a university increasing its capacity to commercialize technology to lead the knowledge-based society has an important part to play in development of industries, companies, and the nation."
