Ajou's Professor Se Jin Jeon receives the Best Paper Award from Springer

Ajou University Professor Se Jin Jeon (Department of Civil System Engineering) received the Best Paper Award from Springer, one of the world's largest academic publishers.
The award-winning paper entitled "Estimation of Friction Coefficient Using Smart Strand" was published in September 2015 in The International Journal of Concrete Structures and Material. The paper estimated deformation features of pre-stressed concrete structures by using strands inserted with optical fiber sensors, which dramatically improved accuracy compared to the existing electric resistance sensors. The paper then suggested ways for estimating important factors in structural designs such as friction coefficients. The paper dealt with the findings of experiments in which specimens with a 20-meter space between columns were used. They are now being used in forecasting the short and long-term structural behaviors of actual bridges with a 60-meter space between columns.
Professor Jeon plans to continue working on studies utilizing smart strands in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.
